My nightgown danced as I made my way through the quiet hallways.
“Paper clips, scissors, cardboard, paper. Where am I going to find metal for the radios box?” Just then a big crash came from the kitchen.
“Kathy? Where are you?” It was Mom.
“Um just grabbing something from my room,” I lied.
“Oh ok! See me when you’re done,” she replied. I didn’t want to lie to her, but I couldn’t let her know I was trying to leave them. When I didn’t hear anything again I tiptoed to the kitchen. My hands shook as I went to open the cabinet. Inside was a giant pan decorated with small pink flowers.
“This will do,” I whispered. I went into my room and looked at everything I had gathered. As I started building I smiled. I’ll see my real parents soon. I was even excited to see Mrs. Harold. My brain wandered off as my hands built. I was almost done when someone knocked on my door. I got up and opened it. I was surprised to see a letter when I opened it. I knelt down and picked up the letter. Inside was a picture of my family. I felt a tear roll down my cheek. I’d miss them. I knew I had to finish, though. When I finally finished, a wave of proudness washed over me. I went inside and sat down. I knew what was going to happen next, and I wasn’t surprised to feel the ground start to shake when I turned on the radio. Then something odd happened. Instead of the blue and purple I was getting ready for I got green. Bright green.
