A magnet is an object or device that produces a magnetic field.
Magnets attract objects made of nickel, iron, and cobalt.
A magnet has two poles, the north pole and the south pole.
Opposite poles of two magnets always attract to each other.
REPEL
Like poles of two magnets always repel each other.
The Earth also behaves like a magnet.
South Pole of Earth’s magnet is in the geographical North.
So, North Pole of Earth’s magnet is in the geographical South.
A freely suspended magnet always rests in the North- South direction.
This is because opposite poles attract each other.
The region surrounding a magnet in which the force of the magnet can be experienced is called its magnetic field.
TO VIEW A MAGNETIC FIELD
- Take a bar magnet and keep it on a table
- Keep a transparent sheet on top of the magnet
- Now, take some iron filings and sprinkle them on the paper.
- Note: In reality, the iron filings will arrange immediately after getting sprinkled
- The iron filings will start arranging in a definite pattern around the magnet
- This pattern is called a magnetic field!
