What is a “PICC line” you ask? A PICC line is not what you think it is! It’s not a picnic or has to do with eating. A PICC line is a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter that goes into your body. It is a thin, soft long catheter (tube)that is inserted into your vein. The catheter is positioned in a large vein that carries blood into the heart. It goes in your arm. The doctors will decide where in your arm it goes.
You can get a Picc line for different reasons. For instance I got my PICC line because I got strep in my elbow. I got blood clots in my upper forearm on my right arm. So the PICC line helps transport medicine into my body. It helps my body get the medicine faster that a pill or liquid would if I were to take take it orally (mouth).
PICC lines in stay in place for a long time. My PICC line will be for a month. So other people will have it in for a month or a year. PICC lines are not only for medicine. It is also used for nutrition or for blood draws.
I find my PICC line is very helpful. I wouldn’t mind having it in longer. Because it prevents you from getting stuck with a needle. So you don’t have to worry about someone missing your vein for a blood or IV. The best part you don’t have to be scared of it coming out. Because it sowed into you three ways or more depends where you have it.
Here is a picture of my arm. If you have any questions feel free to ask me.
